FINE ARTS FOR A CAUSE, INC.

Picture
Fine Arts for a Cause is a student nonprofit organization dedicated to allowing students to use their passion for the fine arts (spoken word poetry, music, visual art, theatre, etc.) to stand up for what they believe in. I co-founded Fine Arts for A Cause in 2016 during my freshman year after realizing that there were very few extracurricular performance-based organizations outside of the school theatre department. I had previously organized and participated in a fine arts showcase in middle school, and I wanted to bring the unifying aspects of art, event planning, and community service to Colleyville Heritage.

2019-20: Humanity & Black Lives Matter

Fine Arts for a Cause began its 2019-2020 season with the central theme "Humanity," meant to encompass a myriad of human-centric issues including immigration, justice for Black lives, LGBTQ+ rights, etc. In the fall, we ran our second art auction partnered with the Colleyville Heritage Theatre Department during their run of The White Rose, with proceeds going to Justice for our Neighbors, a local non-profit that guides undocumented immigrants through the immigration process.
We were in the midst of preparation for our third annual fine arts showcase, United We Stand, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and we were unable to continue our work in person. We then opted for a virtual format, and reached out to young Black artists across the country, hoping to amplify young Black voices during this time of civil unrest and social change. We encouraged those watching to donate to Black Lives Matter and Color of Change, and donated our own proceeds to these organizations as well.

2018-19: Mental Health Awareness

In the 2018-19 year, Fine Arts for a Cause shifted its focus to the subject of mental health awareness and support.
In the fall, we once again partnered with the Colleyville Heritage Theatre Department, presenting an art auction through the run of Starry Night, a production about the life of Vincent Van Gogh.
On March 17, 2019, we presented our second annual showcase. It featured student-performed poems, dance, songs, and theatre with the inclusion of two guest performers, with proceeds going to YouthEra.

2017-18: Women's Empowerment

Branching off of its previous work, Fine Arts for a Cause's focus was women's empowerment, a controversial and timely issue especially after the #MeToo movement and the international women's marches.
For our fall project, we partnered with the Colleyville Heritage Theatre department and Girls, Inc., a local nonprofit designed to create a safe, empowering environment for girls from low-income communities. Girls, Inc. students were able to attend a performance of the all-female production of Julius Caesar and participate in a Q&A with the cast, crew, and directors.
In the spring, we had our first ever student showcase. Students wrote poems, performed songs, choreographed dances, and created art to raise awareness for the unique struggles women and girls face.

2016-17: Girls' Education in Developing Countries

In Fine Arts for a Cause's infancy, our mission was to spread awareness for the education disparity facing women and girls, especially in countries in stage 2 and 3 of the demographic transition model.

At the end of the year, as a project for my English class, I created a TED talk about Fine Arts for a Cause's goals, growth, and challenges.
